Empowering girls through training and participation

For the past two weeks, we have trained 20 more girls on adolescent reproductive health and HIV/Aids, totaling our number to 52 girls. These short trainings to be provided in series will help to equip the target girls with skill and abilities regarding their sexuality and well being. We believe informed girls will be able to protect themselves and prevent exposure to HIV. These girls will be able to make wise choices and reduce their vulnerability to abuse and HIV/AIDS infection.

Participation girls also had an opportunity to share real life experiences on their sufferings and problems and explored ways and means on how best to overcome their problems. Meanwhile each club has been given netball to enhance their frequency of meeting and also to be preparing for Girls Empowerment and HIV/AIDS prevention tournament scheduled in November and finals to take place on 1st December, 2008 (World Aids Day). Participating girls are currently composing songs carrying information about HIV/Aids, gender and women rights in preparation to community mobilization and sensitization campaign activities to be conducted between October-November 2008.

Morale continues to mount amongst girls in our target area as more girls want to join the clubs and be part of this initiative.

I have leant that given an opportunity girls can do wonders and that problems girls are facing can better be solved by girls themselves. Participating girls are exploring on survival options that does not put their lives at risk.

Building Capacity of vulnerable girls in Malawi
Related to country: Malawi

I have been working in HIV/Aids prevention programs among the youths for the past eight years. I am so passionate for the young people more especially girls and young women who are most of the times victim of abuse, sexual exploitation and lack adequate education on SEXUALITY and HIV/Aids.

Most girls targeted in this campaign are those denied of the opportunity to higher education and are forced to premature marriages and get married to elderly men who had had multiple sexual partners. Unfortunately their marriages do not last long and are dumped and left with big responsibilities of caring for their siblings. Sex becomes a means of survival for these girls and this again increases probable to HIV exposure. Some of the girls have dropped out of school because they are involved in caring for their sick parents or have shoulder the responsibility of caring for younger brothers and sisters (after parent demise). This campaign will also target in school girls so that they are adequately skilled and be able to make wise and informed choices and decisions.

This campaign intends to reach 50 girls as direct beneficiaries and 400 girls indirectly.

Project Progress (15-30 June 2008)
1. Establishment of three girls clubs.
Three clubs has been established so far and these are Manja volunteer girls club, Misesa young women for change and Che Nsomba club. The clubs have elected their leaders and established rules and norms for their clubs. Members of these clubs will be involved in voluntarism and will be recruited as peer educators to have a multiplier effect. I believe young people can easily learn and believe from their peers and the trained Peer Educators will be expected to reach out to more girls and young women on HIV/Aids issues, sexuality, gender and women’s right.

The next course of action is the actual Peer Education Training.

2. Planning meetings.
Planning sessions have been taking place with girls involved in this project and community members (parents and local leadership). Basically this activity was aimed at identifying information gaps and better understand sexual and reproductive health needs of girls. This exercise was helpful in designing training manual (content and style) and preparing for other IEC materials.

Training manual is being finalized
